Dear Friends of the Rapid Prototyping Sector

In the aftermath of the second gulf war, hundreds of Iraqi civilians are dying or are disfigured due to a lack of medical supplies or proper treatment. In May 2005, five leading companies associated with rapid prototyping and additive fabrication joined forces and started the RP4Baghdad project - www.rp4baghdad.org. Technologies, resources and know-how were made available to Iraqi surgeons dealing with complex head injury and missing limbs.

The companies that founded RP4Baghdad are active in the medical sector. We care to demonstrate that our industry is willing to help the people of Iraq. Also, we hope to make our industry more known to the general public.

We work in the following way: Our collaborators in Iraq make a CT or optical scan of the patients and send the data over the Internet to participating companies in Europe and the US. We process the data and produce physical parts of the head or a personalized limb. We ship these parts to Iraq, along with the needed medical tools and equipment. This includes distractor kits, screws, titanium implants, intramedullary nail systems, etc. Local surgeons then operate on the patients with head injuries. Resulting prosthesis are shipped to Iraq and fit by local doctors and technicians.

After one year, more than 100 patients have benefitted from our humanitarian project, and several are documented at our website but hundreds are still awaiting treatment. The project has grown to multiple cities and a dozen surgeons. In September 2006, we started close collaboration with the non-governmental organization MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors Without Borders).

As the project expands further, more funds and materials are needed. The purpose of this letter is to bring our project to the attention of great number of people and attract additional sponsors. We are constantly looking for companies that are willing to support the project. To ensure the money is well spent, the costs and incomes of the project are available at our website.

Please contact our team for more information, or if you would like to support the project. For more information about MSF activies in Amman and reports visit their website at http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/news/iraq.cfm.
